ICU

An ICU, or intensive care unit, is a special hospital department that provides intensive care medicine to patients who are critically ill or injured. ICU patients often require mechanical ventilation if they have lost the ability to breathe normally.

Common conditions that are treated within ICUs include:

  • Respiratory conditions, such as asthma, pneumonia, and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)
  • Cardiovascular conditions, such as heart attack, heart failure, and stroke
  • Neurological conditions, such as traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and subarachnoid hemorrhage
  • Surgical complications, such as sepsis, bleeding, and organ failure

ICU patients are typically monitored by a team of highly trained medical professionals, including doctors, nurses, and respiratory therapists. ICU patients are also typically connected to a variety of medical equipment, such as ventilators, heart monitors, and dialysis machines.

The goal of ICU care is to provide patients with the support they need to recover from their critical illness or injury. ICU patients typically stay in the ICU for a variable amount of time, depending on the severity of their illness or injury.

Here are some of the things that ICUs are known for:

  • High-quality care provided by a team of highly trained medical professionals
  • Advanced medical equipment and technology
  • Life-saving treatments and procedures

ICUs play a vital role in the healthcare system by providing life-saving care to critically ill and injured patients.
